The Day in Spikedluv (Thursday, July 17)

I hit Price Chopper and the Pharmacy while I was downtown. I hit the bank drive-thru on my way to visit my aunt. I stopped at mom’s on the way home and spent about four hours with her; some of that time we talked, and some we just did our own thing.

I did a load of mom’s laundry, hand-washed dishes, and scooped kitty litter. We had spaghetti for supper.

I read two more Kindle cozies and started the new Rivers of London.

Temps started out at 74.8(F) and reached 92.4.

Challenge #5

Journaling prompt: Be a carnival barker for your favorite movie, book, or show! Write a post that showcases the best your chosen title has to offer and entices passersby to check it out.

This one isn't a favourite per se, but I did recently watch and enjoy it, it's Sherlock & Daughter.

Title: Sherlock & Daughter

Media: Television series

Approx length: 8 episodes, approx 8 hours

Where to find it: CW/HBO Max

What is it, in summary?: A young woman from the US named Amelia arrives at 221B claiming to be Sherlock Holmes' daughter.  Holmes doubts this claim.  At the same time Holmes is in a terrible bind, his dear friends Doctor Watson and Mrs Hudson have been kidnapped, and if he wants them to remain alive the kidnappers have said he is not to investigate any crimes.  He takes Amelia on as his maid/assistant and she goes out into the world collecting clues and information so Holmes can make deductions and appear uninvolved.

What do you love about it?: First off I wanted to say if you are looking for a book accurate Sherlock Holmes adaptation this is not the show for you, I would instead suggest the Granada series which I talk about here.  This show runs more on Holmes style vibes than anything else, plus this is supposed take place several years after the events of the books.  It is also a very "CW" version of Sherlock Holmes, by which I mean there was a lot of focus on the young characters, in this case Amelia, who I did like, lots of drama and action.  I'm probably not explaining it well, but if you've watched CW shows from the past you get their style and vibe.

Anyways, with all the caveats aside, I did enjoy this for what it was, and I found the overarching mystery interesting enough as they tried to figure out how Watson and Mrs Hudson's kidnapping was connected to other crimes.  Also, the characters were likeable, I did like the actor who played Holmes, he's not my fave by any means, no one will probably ever top Brett for me, but I still enjoyed his take on Holmes.

As of right now, the CW has not renewed the show, however, I will say the main overarching storyline of the season is wrapped up by the end.  There were a couple of minor plotlines left open for the possibility of a second season, but you can enjoy the one season as a complete story.

Content warnings: There is murder and violence, I say fairly typical of murder mysteries.  There is a scene where a very minor character commits suicide.

Who do I ship?: Holmes/Watson. Watson is barely in the season and I still ship them!  There are a few small moments throughout the season where you can tell that Holmes is thinking about Watson and they just tug at my heart.  There is a scene at the end of the first episode where Holmes says to himself "My dear Watson, where are you?"  then looks longingly at Watson's medical bag on his desk.  Like come on!  I tried to find a gif of it, but tumblr for once has failed me :( (if I find a gif after I will place it here).

There is also some fun tension between Holmes and a certain villain character that piqued my interest.

Wednesday What I'm...

Back three days and already behind, whee...

Reading
  • I finished New World Witchery by Cory Thomas Hutcheson. Very interesting book, and I enjoyed it a lot. It could have definitely delved deeper into some things, but it's a very broad subject and already very large, so I understand why it didn't.
  • I read The Fifth Di... March 2025, a short anthology of sf/f/h stories that a friend was published in. Hers and one other were really the only good stories in there.
  • I read First Test Graphic Novel by Devin Grayson and Becca Farrow, an adaptation of First Test by Tamora Pierce (Protector of the Small #1). Very good! Protector of the Small is one of my favorites, and this really made me want to reread it.
  • I started Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell, which I'd started a few years ago but had to return to the library before I got very far. I think I'm just about where I made it to last time lol
  • Ficwise, I am, unsurprisingly at this point, still on Gradence. Currently I'm reading bound to lose, bound to win by Anonymous. It's been quite awhile since I've read an arranged marriage fic, so it's been fun!
Watching
  • I got almost to the end of Your Sky, then started over with the roommate to get her into it. It worked! We're now almost at the end again lol It remains fun and cute, even with the surprisingly angsty storyline with Teerak's dad.
  • AEW as usual, plus a PPV. More on that, as well as the GCW show, on another post soon. Hopefully.
Listening
  • Listened to a bit more Jer while I worked yesterday. If anyone has other ska recs, lemme know!
Writing
  • I wrote a poem for a NaNoPoMo prompt, plus another non prompt poem.

The Day in Spikedluv (Wednesday, July 16)

I had a chiropractic appointment this morning and got in a walk around the park.

I hand-washed dishes and emptied the dishwasher before I headed downtown. When I got home I tossed a load of laundry into the washer and changed kitty litter.

I got to mom’s ~10:30am and stayed until ~3pm. I stopped at the library on the way home to pick-up and return books and hit the bank drive-thru for mom. At home I grilled Kielbasa for Pip's supper (I had more tomato sandwiches), hand-washed more dishes, and tossed the laundry in the dryer.

I finished the Amelia Peabody book, DNF'd a Kindle cozy, and started and finished another Kindle cozy.

Temps started out at 61.5(F) and reached 93.6.

ETA: I forgot to mention, mom reminded me yesterday that it was the one year anniversary of the huge storm that took out all six of the large trees in her back yard. (The main reason her porch is so hot now is because there is zero shade when all she used to have was shade.)

Superman (2025)

My brother and I went to see the Superman movie yesterday, and I enjoyed it.  It wasn't a prefect movie, there where a few small things I would have changed, but overall it was entertaining.  The movie doesn't start out with his whole backstory like most Superman films, you start in the middle of the story as it were, and some background information is sprinkled throughout.  They also have "meta-humans" (DC's version of mutants) already a part of the story which was also a nice change, usually in most Superman movies he's the only one with powers.  Lex Luther is very hateable in this one, he is the tech billionaire type who thinks he is smarter than everyone else and willing to do terrible shit to get his way.  I don't think he's my favourite Lex, but I think they did a good job modernizing him. Anyways, overall a fun movie.

On another note, my brother and I usually go to weekday matinees, usually it's just us and some elderly couples in the audience. Well, I kind of forgot the kids were on summer holidays, plus it was "cheap Tuesdays" so the place was pretty full, the most full I've seen a matinee in years, but surprisingly all the kids were well behaved, the movie must have really captured their attention.

About a millisecond before I was about to release my next ebook, a medical crisis occurred in my family (though not to me or my companion). It's the sort of crisis that involves dozens of members of a support team, professional and nonprofessional. I'm one of the two people coordinating all that. I'll continue posting blog fiction here whenever I can, but expect my presence here to be light for a while.

The Day in Spikedluv (Tuesday, July 15)

I hit CVS and Price Chopper while I was downtown (both in order to pick up things for mom), got in a walk around the park, and hit the farm stand on the way home. I’ve been thinking about tomato sandwiches with fresh tomatoes.

I folded last night’s load of laundry, got another washed, and hand-washed some dishes before I left the house this morning. When I got home from downtown I baked a berry cobbler to use some of those berries we’d picked (and put the rest in the freezer), tossed the laundry into the dryer and another load into the washer, hand-washed more dishes, and mixed up some tuna with a nice fresh cucumber (and mayo) for my lunch.

I got to mom’s ~11am and left ~3pm. On the way home I filled my gas tank. At home I put away a load of laundry and tossed the other into the dryer, scooped kitty litter, made an easy supper (Pip had leftover meatloaf I pulled out of the freezer and I made myself open-faced tomato and melted cheese sandwiches with the fresh tomatoes I purchased today), and showered.

I read more in Amelia Peabody and also started and finished another Kindle cozy.

Temps started out at 70.0(F) and reached 92.4.

The Day in Spikedluv (Monday, July 14)

I went downtown as usual today and hit Walmart, Price Chopper and the Feedbag. (The first time I’ve been to the Feed Bag since before mom’s surgery! Pip has been having to do the bird seed run.) I also got in a walk around the park and picked up Chinese for lunch.

I was up an hour before Pip, so before I left the house I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, and scooped kitty litter. After I got home I did another load of laundry (both loads got washed and dried, one got folded), hand-washed more dishes, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, grilled country style pork ribs for Pip’s supper, ran a load in the dishwasher, and shaved.

I finished the Kindle cozy and read more in Amelia Peabody. Hold onto your hats, folks, because I also managed to write ~500 words on a new fic for [community profile] smallfandomfest!!

Temps started out at 70.7(F) and reached 93. We didn’t get the forecasted rain last night, so I didn’t mow the lawn today. It was hot. Hot. Pip wanted to show me where he’d found more berry bushes, so I went for a walk with him and the dogs after lunch. He hadn’t exaggerated, the bramble was huge! So many berries. We picked about two cups, but could’ve been there much longer just to get the ones we could reach. I was ready to die when we got back from that short walk. I had to splash my face with cold water and sit in the AC’d bedroom for a while to cool back down. So HOT. And that was just a short walk, including a bit through the shaded orchard.

4 photos I took on that walk )

Persian/Farsi Speakers Needed For Yahoo Groups Rescue Project

 Fandom History: Persian/Farsi Speakers Needed
In late 2019, TV, movie, anime, gaming, celebrity, music, and book fans assembled to save Yahoo Groups after Verizon decided to shut down the mailing list service. Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project is working on identifying the fandoms of Persian language mailing lists and can use your help. We need people who can read Persian/Farsi natively* right now to help us identify the Unknown groups. You can work at your own pace and it is a low time commitment. Work is done on Discord, just reading the group description and a few messages and summarizing the messages in English, maybe answering a question of clarification ("is it talking about X or Y?"). No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to Discord.

*We're not certain if these mailing lists are using a specific dialect or standard modern Farsi
